Grandma's Dressing
Ingredients
1 Cup celery, finely chopped
1 Cup onion, finely chopped
2 large apples, peeled, cored, and finely chopped
1/2 lb ground pork sausage
2 1/2 Cup turkey or chicken broth
1/2 Cup apple cider
8 Cup bread cubes
1/2 Cup whole cranberry sauce
1/2 Cup golden raisins
1 teaspoon bottled diced garlic
2 Tablespoons ground sage
3 bay leaves
1 Tablespoon sugar
1 teaspoon pepper
2 teaspoons Lawrey's Seasoned Salt
Directions
In a dutch oven or large heavy skillet, fry sausage until crumbly and medium brown. Drain meat and reserve drippings. Set aside. Return four Tablespoons of sausage drippings to pan and add celery, onions, apples, raisins, and garlic. Saute over low heat until onions are translucent and celery and apples are tender (about 10 minutes). Add cranberries, sage, bay leaves, sugar, pepper, and salt, and cook another 6-8 minutes on medium-low. Set aside.
In large bowl, mix bread cubes with sausage mixture. In another bowl, blend broth and cider together and pour over bread and sausage mixture, stirring until all the bread cubes are moist.
Bake at 350 degrees in uncovered baking dish for 35-40 minutes until dressing is light golden brown on top.
Note: It is desirable to mix the dressing and refrigerate for a few hours before baking so the seasonings will have time to blend together.
